Puppies is a work of free verse by Jack Rusher, published here Tuesday, January 06, 2004. It is part of Poems.
Ce n’est pas une poésie politique.
This is a poem about puppies,
not a political poem.
It is a poem about warm fur, sweet breath & wet noses.
It is neither about the war in Iraq,
nor Afghan children without fingers
with which to stroke a puppy.
This poem is about puppies:
there's no cause for alarm.
Andrew Motion wrote a poem called To Whom It May Concern that this poem closely mirrors. His poem was about ice cream in precisely the way that this one is about puppies. What I have attempted to do here is to translate his poem. The original is in English, so this translation is not one from one language to another, but from one time to another.
The only thing I feel I have been able to add in the process of translation is the use of hypertextual elements to reinforce the imagery of the poem. This technique was not available to Professor Motion in writing the original because his medium is print. I like to think he would approve.
